Coffee and Misleading Clues Watching Jeopardy we were sorry to watch one of the Jeopardy's clues result in a wrong answer rewarded as right! A recent routine is enjoying evening coffee— a large cup of decaf—and watching Jeopardy. Because in such wackadoodle times ...
My Life’s Little Equation
Changing a Little Equation (Note: I consulted no math book to double check my assumptions about my life’s little equation,— only for the “art.” ) A grim statistic is changing my life's little equation: Covid deaths in the USA have reached 1,000,000. COVID is spiking...
Lessons I Am [Still] Learning in Time for the Fourth
One of New Vocabulary Lessons I didn’t know calling someone a Karen was an insult. I do now. (And I am sad because I've had good friends and family named Karen and they were not evil people!) But, it’s not a new phenomenon, making snarky comments about another...
Looking for an Anchor Point
Looking for an anchor point as we begin the ninth, (or is it the tenth ), week of social distancing, I rely on a Facebook friend who said it’s day 67. So, that’s an anchor point . . . whatever the week! How goes it with you? Doug and I are maintaining. We are...
Conversations in the Middle of the Night
In conversations in the middle of the night, I am better off talking to God than to myself. Current events and the new normal breed fear if I listen to me. Early in the morning, when sleep decides to take a break, I talk to God; if I talk to myself, I get into...
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
The trailers for the movie Can You Ever Forgive Me looked more lighthearted than it was. It was not funny, although it was a well-done movie. The movie, drawn from a real-life story about a writer, Lee Israel, was deeply affecting. Sadness and lostness pervaded all...
I Wonder
I wonder: If thousands of North Americans, including women and children, formed a caravan, broke through an armed border guard, and walked across Mexico to Guatemala, turning down offers of sanctuary and expecting to be admitted into Guatemala, how would the news...
Checking for Solid Ground When Moving
Nothing can rock one’s world like a move – or old age. Not that I am old; I am moving, however, and without some of the stamina that propelled us here a decade ago. I am checking for solid ground during our move. One verse from Isaiah has been solid and safe ground...
Discarding a Few Good Friends Can Save Money
We have begun packing up our books – constant, dear companions of our marriage. For better or worse, we have always had too many books. In each of our moves, we have tried to let go of some – releasing them to the libraries or Salvation Army, or yard sales; or, most...
The Best Cure for Potomac Fever
Here’s what I think – as if it mattered. I think: All the brouhaha of candidates running for office was a plot by cable news, and broadcast news to gin up drama to attract advertisers to sell advertising for a political reality show. Talk radio is as ridiculous . . ....
Understanding the Times
A few verses from Isaiah comfort and goad me: Isaiah 33:6 says the Lord will be the stability of my times, a wealth of wisdom, salvation and knowledge. Isaiah 46:3-5 tells me He is the God of my gray hairs. When I reflect on the news — wars, rumors of wars, and natural disasters, suffering refugees, and problems of daily living — and put in my two cents, I hope as I exhort myself to be useful, I will encourage dear readers to keep seeking and serving.
A Fresh Look at Old Friends
What does stability of my times mean when terrors assault, financial markets roil, and people excuse crummy behavior as within bounds?
